What happens during the Blood Pressure Check?

A member of our trained pharmacy staff will take your blood pressure in the privacy of a consultation room. Your result will be explained to you and you will be offered any advice and support needed to manage your blood pressure. If appropriate, we may refer you to your doctor.

Where can I get my blood pressure checked?

You can have your blood pressure checked at  Fishpool Pharmacy. No appointment is usually needed; just call in and ask one of our pharmacy team.

How long will it take?

The check-up will only take a few minutes, but our staff member will take as long as required to answer any questions you have.

The prevalence of diabetes is rising alarmingly. It is estimated to affect over three million people in the UK today. However, recent statistics suggest that up to five million people in the UK will develop Type 2 Diabetes by 2025.

At Fishpool Pharmacy we offer a FREE screening service to determine whether you are at risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes. It’s completely confidential and takes just a few minutes.

What will happen during the Type 2 Diabetes Screening Service?

The service will take place in a private consultation room by a trained member of staff. You will be asked some questions so that they can assess your risk of Type 2 diabetes. These will be about:

• Your age
• Your height, weight and waist measurement
• Your daily activity
• Your diet, in particular how many fruit and vegetables you eat
• If you use high blood pressure medication
• If you have ever had a high blood glucose reading
• If any family member has diabetes

If you are at risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes we can advise you on how to slow or even reduce your risk of developing the condition.

If you’re at high risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes we’ll measure your blood pressure and take a very small finger-prick sample of blood to measure your blood glucose level.

Depending on the results of this test, we may ask you to come back for further assessment. This will include:

• A fasting blood glucose test, which involves taking a sample of blood when you have an empty stomach (usually first thing in the morning before you have breakfast)
• Weight, height and waist measurement
• Additional blood pressure measurements

We’ll also offer you lifestyle advice and recommend ways of reducing your chance of developing Type 2 Diabetes.

If appropriate, we may refer you to your doctor.

The consultation will only take a few minutes.

Medicine use review is a face-to-face consultation between a pharmacist and a patient to discuss their medicines, both prescribed and non-prescribed. The review is aims to help increase patients’ knowledge and understanding of their medicines, including how and why they should be taken. It also provides an opportunity to highlight any issues, side effects or other medicine-related problems from the patient’s perspective and propose solutions if appropriate. 

A Medicine Use Review

As your pharmacist we will be able to assess your needs, give you advice, suggest medicines if appropriate, and refer you to a GP if necessary.

If you normally pay a prescription charge, this charge will apply here. If you’re exempt from prescription charges – if you’re under 16 or over 60, for example, or if you have a prescription prepayment certificate (PPC) – you won’t pay for the medicine.

Flu vaccination is available every year on the NHS to help protect adults and children at risk of flu and its complications.

Flu can be unpleasant, but if you are otherwise healthy it will usually clear up on its own within a week. However, flu can be more severe in certain people, such as:

• anyone aged 65 and over
• pregnant women
• children and adults with an underlying health condition (particularly long-term heart or respiratory disease)
• children and adults with weakened immune systems

Anyone in these risk groups is more likely to develop potentially serious complications of flu, such as pneumonia (a lung infection), so it’s recommended that they have a flu vaccine every year to protect them.

The injected flu vaccine is offered free on the NHS annually to:

• adults over the age of 18 at risk of flu (including everyone aged 65 and over)
• pregnant women
• children aged six months to two years at risk of flu
